Dealing with discomfort or minor issues related to braces is a common part of orthodontic care. Here’s how you can handle some of these situations at home:
General Soreness
It’s normal to experience mild discomfort, especially when wires are changed or new brackets are placed. Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen can provide temporary relief. If your cheeks or gums feel sore, rinsing with warm salt water and using wax can help alleviate the discomfort.

Loose Bracket
A bracket may become loose, often due to eating foods that should be avoided with braces. If the bracket remains on the wire and isn’t causing discomfort, you can usually wait until your next appointment. However, contact Champion Orthodontics for confirmation. If the bracket is causing irritation, applying wax can prevent it from rubbing against your cheeks or gums.
Poking Wire
Shifting teeth can sometimes cause wires to poke at the back of your mouth. Wax is an effective way to cover the wire and provide padding. If you’re out of wax, a small piece of cotton from a cotton ball can serve as a temporary protective barrier.
Loose Wire
In some cases, wires can slip out of brackets and become loose. You can often reposition the wire yourself using a Q-tip, sterile tweezers, or a soft eraser to guide it back into place. If you’re having difficulty, don’t force it. You can trim a section of the wire with clippers and apply wax to prevent further irritation.
